Kilim textiles have been around for centuries in the form of carpets or rugs and are made in many parts of the world including the Middle East and Eastern Europe. The term itself comes from the Persian word “gilim”, meaning coarse-woven blanket.
When you see the word “kilim” this typically indicates a pileless rug produced by flatweaving techniques. This also means that they tend to be more lightweight than traditional rugs, which tend to be thicker and heavier. But don’t be fooled, pile height does not equate to quality!
Many kilims you see have signature geometric patterns or ‘motifs’ woven into the design and can be made using brightly dyed fabrics. Also, lightweight rugs are easier to move around and care for, and not to mention, are great for layering!
Even if you’re not familiar with the term “kilim” I’m sure you’ve seen them pop up in places without even knowing! Kilims have been crafted into a wide variety of items, including bags and pillows (check out our own Moroccan throw Boot!).
