Description
Well-known in the arts and crafts industry as Moroccan wedding blankets, these beautiful products are a result of impressive Moroccan craftsmanship! They are woven out of sheep’s wool, cotton and linen thanks to the talented hands of the Berber women living in harmony with nature in the Middle Atlas mountains of Northern Morocco.
These beautifully made Berber wedding blankets are made by the bride’s female relatives to welcome a wedding. The process is intricate and can last several hours or even weeks of work to garnish the blanket with literally hundreds of mirrored sequins once the weaving is fully done; it is fairly common in rural areas that during this collaborative labor of love, the bride’s relatives teach her all about the birds and the bees, among other marital requirements and outlooks.
After the wedding ceremony, the bride has the blanket on around her neck like a cape.
The visual motifs contain various meanings and purposes. The process of hand-weaving, itself, is meant to induce the textile with baraka, or blessings. When it is ready, the wedding blanket is not only a warm decoration for the bride, but also serves as a shield against all evil and as a means to bestow fertility and good fortune upon the newlyweds.
